Mindful Making – Drawing Patterned Butterflies

This week the topic of transformation has come up a lot in the programs I’m in, the books I’m reading as well as in a discussion with my book club this week.

I’ve been doing a lot of patterned drawings lately as part of my mindset practice (along with journaling of course!) because I find it really calming and relaxing. I got inspired to draw some butterflies seeing that they symbolize transformation.

I was struggling with what to blog about this week. It felt really forced – like I HAD TO do it but really wasn’t clear on what to say. This is the beauty of #mindfulmaking and journaling. I gave myself space to create which helps to clear my head and allow ideas to flow in. As I was drawing the butterflies an idea came to me for my blog post. I was really excited and eager to write. This is called INSPIRED action as compared to forced action. I’ll link to the blog post at the end of this post – first let me show you some butterflies!

I love to use colored pencils because of the control I have with them so this was my first butterfly.

I’ve been doing a lot of other drawings which I’ll show you in future posts all with colored pencils so I thought maybe it was time to switch it up a bit and use brush markers.

Markers are quicker and definitely fun but you don’t have as much control with them which is something I like. There’s a saying – “how you do one thing is how you do everything”. Liking to be in control even filters down to my drawings! 🙂

I’ve been using a Mixed Media sketchbook which means the paper is lightly textured. When using pencils you won’t get full coverage which you can see from this closeup.

It doesn’t really bother me but I think for my next sketchbook I’ll try smooth paper just to test out the difference.

If you need a way to feel calm and relaxed, try drawing! How about drawing some butterflies? You never know what creative ideas will filter in. I’d love to see your patterned butterfly drawings! Comment below with your drawing or better yet post it on Instagram and tag me @staceynatal so I can see and share with my audience!

These are the supplies I used:

  • Colored Pencils + Sharpener
  • Brush Markers
  • Mix Media Sketchbook

Lastly here’s the link to the blog post I wrote – Journal Your Way To Personal Transformation.
